FAQ

What should I expect on my first visit?
It is not uncommon that on your very first visit, the services will be limited to a comprehensive exam and a full set of x-rays with Dr. Barker. The primary focus of this visit is data collection and an opportunity to establish rapport so that we can better understand your dental needs and expectations. We may not do a cleaning on your first visit due to either time or scheduling restrictions. If you would like to have a cleaning on your first visit, please make us aware of your expectations so that we can better serve your needs.

Are X-rays necessary?
X-rays play a critical role in our ability to diagnose disease in your mouth. It is not sufficient to find and diagnose disease based only on a visual exam and this is considered the standard of care for the ADA (American Dental Association) as well as our office. Under certain circumstances, x-rays can be delayed; especially if there is a medical reason involved that is supported by your physician.

What Insurance do you accept?
We accept most PPO dental insurance plans. Please call our office at 410-647-6453 to find out if we are an In-Network provider or Out of Network provider for your specific insurance plan and what that means for you and your co-pays.

Are you accepting new patients?
Yes! We gratefully accept new patients and are thankful for those referring their friends, family, and co-workers to our office.

Where are you located?
Our address is 8131 Ritchie Highway, Suite J, Pasadena, MD 21122. We are located in a professional office building on the side of Ritchie Highway, on the second floor. Please see our directions (make link).

Do you treat emergencies?
Emergency patients are always welcome and should call to schedule as soon as possible.

What are your office hours?
We are in the office on Mon and Tues from 8-5, Wed 10-7 and Thurs 9-4.

Do you see children?
We do see children and are here to help your little one(s) have a positive experience at the dentist office.

At what age should I start taking my child to see the dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children see a dentist when their first tooth appears or no later than his/her first birthday. During a child’s first visit, Dr. Barker will check teeth development, and most importantly discuss proper oral hygiene care. Most children do not have their first dental cleaning until age 2 or 3, depending on their tolerance.

How often should I see the dentist?
Children, teens, and adults should all see the dentist for a regular checkup at least once every six months. Patients who are at a greater risk for oral cancer or gum disease may be required to see the dentist more than just twice a year. Dr. Barker will help determine how often you should visit the dentist for regular checkups.

My teeth feel fine. Do I still need to see a dentist?
Your teeth may feel fine, but it is still important to see the dentist regularly because problems can exist without you knowing. Your smile’s appearance is important, and we can help keep your smile healthy and looking beautiful. With so many advances in dentistry, you no longer have to settle for stained, chipped, missing, or misshapen teeth. Dr. Barker offers many treatment choices that can help you smile with confidence.

How can I take care of my teeth between dental checkups?

  • ALWAYS remember to brush your teeth at least two times a day (most importantly – at night), and floss at least once!
  • Avoid foods with a lot of sugar. Sugar increases the amount of bacteria that grows in your mouth causing more plaque and possibly cavities.
  • Avoid tobacco which can stain your teeth, cause gum disease, and eventually lead to oral cancer.
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue! By brushing your tongue, you will remove food particles and reduce the amount of plaque-causing bacteria.
  • Tongue brushing also helps keep your breath fresh.
  • Be sure to schedule your routine checkup!!
