Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (N2O) often referred to as laughing gas, is a mild sedative agent used to manage anxiety during dental procedures. Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless, inorganic gas that has been safely and effectively used for several centuries. Nitrous oxide can be safely used for both adults and children.

The nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and administered through a small mask that fits over your nose. The effects of the nitrous oxide are typically felt within a few minutes. You may feel an enjoyable tingling sensation, slightly light-headed, and/or heaviness in your arms or legs. Ultimately, you should feel calm and comfortable throughout the entirety of your dental procedure. Once the mask is removed, the nitrous oxide effects will quickly dissipate with regular breathing.

Dr. Gary S Barker favors nitrous oxide for many reasons. For one, the depth of sedation can be altered with ease. Nitrous oxide works in mere minutes, poses no threat to the internal organs and can be used on patients of all demographics. Because the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly, patients are able to drive themselves to and from their dental appointment. Plus, nitrous oxide does not put you to sleep, so you are able to hear and respond to questions or instructions. Most importantly, when used in conjunction with a local anesthetic, patients are able to have a pain-free, anxiety-free dental experience.

Nitrous oxide is recommended for

  • Patients who are fearful, anxious, or uncooperative

  • Patients with special health care needs

  • Patients with gag reflexes that interfere with dental care

  • Patients who do not respond adequately to local anesthesia

  • Younger patients who must undergo lengthy dental procedures
