Q & A
Are you accepting new patients?
Yes! We gratefully accept new patients and are thankful for those referring their friends, family, and co-workers to our office.
What should I expect on my first visit?
It is not uncommon that on your very first visit, the services will be limited to a comprehensive exam and a full set of x-rays. The primary focus of this visit is data collection and an opportunity to establish rapport so that we can better understand your dental needs and expectations. We may not do a cleaning on your first visit due to either time or scheduling restrictions. If you would like to have a cleaning on your first visit, please make us aware of your expectations so that we can better serve your needs.
How often should I see the dentist?
Children, teens, and adults should visit the dentist at least every six months. These regular visits help prevent problems, catch issues early, and keep your smile healthy. Some patients—such as those at higher risk for gum disease or oral cancer—may benefit from more frequent visits. Dr. Barker will recommend the schedule that’s best for your individual needs.
Do you treat emergencies?
Emergency patients are always welcome and should call to schedule as soon as possible.
Do you see children?
We enjoy seeing children and are here to help your little one(s) have a positive experience at the dentist office.
At what age should I start taking my child to see the dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children visit the dentist when their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. Early visits focus on parent education and helping your child feel comfortable in the dental office. As your child’s teeth begin to erupt, Dr. Barker will monitor their development. Most children are ready for their first dental cleaning around age 2 or 3, depending on their comfort level.
How can I prepare my child for their first dental visit?
Keep it simple and positive! Talk about the dentist in a positive light and avoid using words that may cause fear. You are welcome to bring your child in during your own visit so they can meet us and have a “happy visit” for themselves. This allows them to get comfortable with our team and office.
Should my child get dental sealants?
Yes, in most cases. Sealants are thin coatings applied to the back teeth to protect them from cavities. They’re quick, painless, and very effective in preventing decay.
My teeth feel fine. Do I still need to see a dentist?
Yes! Even if your teeth feel fine, it is still important to see the dentist regularly. Many dental problems—such as cavities, gum disease, or early signs of oral cancer—can develop without causing pain or obvious symptoms. Regular checkups help catch issues early and keep your smile healthy. Plus, with today’s advances in dentistry, Dr. Barker offers a variety of treatments to keep your teeth looking their best so you can smile with confidence.
Are X-rays really necessary?
X-rays play a critical role in our ability to diagnose disease in your mouth. It is not sufficient to find and diagnose disease based only on a visual exam and this is considered the standard of care for the ADA (American Dental Association) as well as our office. Under certain circumstances, x-rays can be delayed; especially if there is a medical reason involved that is supported by your physician.
What Insurance do you accept?
We accept most PPO dental insurance plans. Please call our office at 410-647-6453 to find out if we are an In-Network provider or Out of Network provider for your specific insurance plan and what that means for you and your co-pays.
Where are you located?
Our address is 8131 Ritchie Highway, Suite J, Pasadena, MD 21122. We are located in The Festival of Pasadena in the “professional office” building on the side of Ritchie Highway. You will enter through double glass doors and take the elevator (or stairs) up to the second floor. We are at the end of the hallway on the left.
What options do I have for whitening my teeth?
We offer professional whitening treatments that are stronger and more effective than over-the-counter products. Dr. Barker can recommend the best option based on your goals and tooth sensitivity.
What can be done about chipped or misshapen teeth?
Depending on your needs, options may include bonding, veneers, or crowns. These treatments can restore both function and appearance so you can smile with confidence.
How can I take care of my teeth between dental checkups?
ALWAYS remember to brush your teeth at least two times a day (most importantly – at night), and floss at least once per day!
Avoid foods with a lot of sugar. Sugar increases the amount of bacteria that grows in your mouth causing more plaque and possibly cavities.
Avoid tobacco which can stain your teeth, cause gum disease, and potentially lead to oral cancer.
Don’t forget to brush your tongue! By brushing your tongue, you will remove food particles and reduce the amount of plaque-causing bacteria. Tongue brushing also helps keep your breath fresh.
Be sure to schedule your routine checkup!!
